100 Years of an Automobile Success Story

Motor vehicles from Saxony have been providing people with mobility for more than one hundred years now. One of the pioneers of this industry was August Horch, who came to Saxony in 1902 and began building automobiles in Zwickau in 1904. He was the first car manufacturer in Germany to use aluminium casting for engines and gearboxes. He also used the cardan shaft for power transmission and high-tensile steel for transmission gearwheels.

Whether drive mechanisms or other car parts, the companies and developmental centers active in the automobile industry in Saxony produce all the components and equipment required for manufacturing automobiles.
Today, with a 24 percent share in industry turnover and a 38 percent share in exports, car manufacturing is Saxony´s major industry.

Automobile Training & Research in Saxony

The unique success story of "Autoland Saxony" has also become possible through the regional research environment which has always had strong ties to the state’s economy. In total, more than 50 university and extra-university research institutions are focused on all issues related to the automobile. A significant part of these research assignments is carried out on behalf of the internationally active automobile manufacturers and automotive suppliers.
